How can I help support this group?

We are always looking for LGBTQIA+ volunteers to help facilitate our groups or support us in other roles within the organisation. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for more info about volunteer opportunities.

I’m not sure what my sexual orientation or my gender identity is. Is the LGBTQIA+ group for me?

Yes! We welcome anyone who may be unsure and is navigating their identity and understand how important it is to have a space for people to explore and talk freely about what you’re feeling. Scroll to the bottom of the page to learn more about sexual orientations and gender identities.

I’m not out and I’m nervous

We may all be at different stages of our coming out journey and we ask that everyone who joins the group respects this. There is no pressure to come out in the group.

I’m worried about my confidentiality

What’s said in the group stays in the group. Whilst it’s understandable to be nervous, the group is a safe space. We’re all in this together and nothing will be shared outside of the group.

The only exception would be if we were concerned about yours or another person’s safety and wellbeing.

Do I have to talk in the group?

Not at all. Some people like to join the group to safely talk about how they’re feeling or whats going on in their life and others prefer to just be present and feel connected to others. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for more info about what to expect in this group.

Do I have to talk about LGBTQIA+ topics?

Not at all. Whilst we understand how important community is, you can talk about anything you like in the group.

I have experienced trauma, discrimination and prejudice, can I speak openly about my experiences?

Yes! This is a space where members are safe to talk about anything they have previously experienced or are currently experiencing.

Do I need to have my camera on?

We ask all of our members to keep their camera on for the whole meeting so that our members can see who they are talking in order to make them feel safe and comfortable. There are times when a member may not feel comfortable showing their face in the group and we would ask you to email service@changesbristol.org.uk ahead of the meeting to explain why. If it is agreed that you can have your camera turned off, you should still always show your face at the start of the meeting and briefly after the break. Members and facilitators want to ensure that privacy is maintained and that includes yours.

Is there someone who can answer my questions first?

Absolutely! We know that joining a new group can be daunting. Scroll to the bottom of the screen for more info about what to expect in this group. If that doesn’t answer your questions, please email Steven or Kate (our LGBTQIA+ Project Workers) and they will be more than happy to answer your questions: steven@changesbristol.org.uk or kate@changesbristol.org.uk

This will be my first group

If you’ve never been to this online group before, we are giving new members the opportunity to join the group 15 minutes before it starts so you can chat to our facilitators and other new members who may be joining for the first time.

If you would like to do this, please email service@changesbristol.org.uk at least two hours before the meeting starts so we can let our facilitators know and they can let you into the group early.
